Within the visit of the Permanent Representative of Ukraine Tamila Tasheva to the Republic of Türkiye an important meeting was held with three members of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, who are also members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group of Ukraine and Türkiye: Chairman of the Friendship Group Yıldırım Tuğrul Türkeş, his deputy and deputy of the ruling party of Türkiye Mehmet Altay, as well as a member of the Friendship Group, professor and deputy of the National Party of Türkiye Kamil Aydin.

Members of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye expressed their sincere condolences to the Ukrainian people on the death of those citizens who lost their lives during the war: civilians and defenders of Ukraine. They also noted Türkiye’s assistance in various aspects, in particular humanitarian support to Ukraine, the role of the Republic of Türkiye in the negotiation process on the release of illegally imprisoned Ilmi Umerov and Akhtem Chiygoz. They also recalled that Türkiye had mediated in the negotiations on the release of captured soldiers from Azovstal. The parliamentarians reminded that currently President Erdogan together with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu are doing everything possible to release the Crimean political prisoners.

Separately, the representatives of the Ukraine-Türkiye Friendship Group noted the support of the Crimea Platform by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye and participation in the Summits both at the level of the President of Türkiye Recep Erdogan and at the level of the Head of the Parliament Mustafa Şentop.

“Crimea has always been special for Türkiye,” said Mr. Tuğrul Türkeş. He also reminded the audience of all the suffering of the Crimean Tatar people, which they had to endure first because of the deportation in 1944, and then because of the occupation of the peninsula in 2014.

Mr. Kamil Aydin said that Türkiye continues to actively support Ukraine at the international level. “In the Republic of Türkiye, at all levels – from the President to the clerk – as well as at the level of the Turkish people, everything possible is being done to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. The tragedy of Ukraine is our tragedy. The joy of Ukraine will be our joy,” Mr. Aydın concluded.

The deputy of the Justice and Development Party – the ruling party of Türkiye – Mehmet Altay noted that he had come to Ankara from his hometown of Uşak, where he was elected, specifically to meet with the Permanent Representative. He also expressed condolences to Ukrainians personally and on behalf of all Turkish people. “The work that Türkiye is doing at the presidential and bureaucratic levels to support Ukraine will continue,” Mr. Altay assured.

Tamila Tasheva thanked her colleagues for the strong support of Ukraine at all levels and emphasized the role of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye in the de-occupation and reintegration of Crimea. She mentioned the already developed and adopted Law “On Indigenous Peoples”, as well as the preparation of the draft law “On the status of the Crimean Tatar people”.

The Permanent Representative addressed the parliamentarians with several important issues: continuation of mediation in the release of Ukrainian citizens illegally detained by the Russian Federation in the occupied Crimea and on its territory, support for the establishment of a Special International Tribunal to punish war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine, condemnation of the aggressor country’s attacks on critical infrastructure of Ukraine and support for the appeal for the introduction of financial mechanisms for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Mr. Kamil Aydin assured that he will pass all the requests of Tamila Tasheva to those structures responsible for making appropriate decisions.

In the end, the Permanent Representative renewed the invitation for the Chairman of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye and the present parliamentarians to Ukraine. “We hope to welcome you soon in Kyiv, Lviv and soon in Bakhchisaray”.

The invitation was accepted positively. Mr. Türkesh noted that he had been to Bakhchisarai in his time and hopes to go there again, because he has many warm memories.
