Resolution 2259 (2019) «The escalation of tensions around the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait and threats to European security»

The Assembly urges Russia to immediate release the captured Ukrainian sailors; to apply international legal and diplomatic procedures to resolve and de-escalate the conflict; to ensure freedom of passage in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait in accordance with the Agreement between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on Cooperation in the Use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait of 2003 and other mutually agreed procedures. The adopted document is a significant step forward in the assessment by the European political elite of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as the text for the first time contains a reference to the Geneva Conventions, thus de facto making applicable the term «prisoners of war».
