Situation in Ukraine, CMCE meeting 1194

The first decision of the CMCE, adopted in the context of ensuring protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Despite resistance, the Ukrainian delegation succeeded in insisting that a clause be included where Permanent Representatives reaffirm their countries’ commitment to international law, the UN Charter, the CoE Charter, and in particular the principle of peaceful settlement of disputes and respect for territorial integrity, unity and independence of Ukraine (item 2).

Subsequent events, including the actual armed aggression of the Russian Federation against the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Crimea and the occupation of Crimea by Russian troops, confirmed justification of such a step.
