29 September — Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Babyn Yar

On 29 September, Ukraine honours the memory of the victims of the Babyn Yar tragedy — one of the most horrific symbols of the Holocaust and the mass crimes committed during the Second World War.

Eighty-five years ago, on 29–30 September 1941, the Nazi occupation authorities carried out the mass execution of nearly 34,000 Jews at Babyn Yar. In the following years, the site became a place of mass killings of members of various groups persecuted by the occupation regime.

Mass crimes were committed throughout the territory of Ukraine occupied by the Nazis, including Crimea. During the Nazi occupation of the peninsula, Jews, Krymchaks, Roma and other residents were persecuted and murdered.

Today, we honour the memory of the victims of Babyn Yar and all those who lost their lives as a result of the crimes committed by the occupation regime during the Second World War.

The memory of these tragedies reminds us of the value of human life and of the unacceptability of hatred, discrimination and crimes against humanity.
