Arbitral tribunal constituted under UNCLOS, Annex VII concerning Coastal State Rights in the Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and Kerch Strait
The merits of the case: violation by the Russian Federation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in the territorial sea adjacent to the Crimean coast, the waters of the Black and Azov Seas and the Kerch Strait and request for reparation of damages.
Substantial stages of the case:
December 22, 2016 – the Arbitral Tribunal was established in accordance with the UNCLOS Annex VII. The Administrator of the Tribunal is the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
February 19, 2018 – Ukraine submitted a Memorandum for Russia’s violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea
February 21, 2020 – the award of the arbitral tribunal on jurisdiction, which dismissed Russia’s arguments with respect to jurisdiction.
May 20, 2021 – Ukraine submitted its revised Memorial.
May 21, 2022 – the deadline for submitting a Counter-Memorandum by Russian Federation.
