Australia Imposes Sanctions on Russian “Shadow Fleet” Vessels
The Government of Australia has announced targeted sanctions against 60 vessels linked to the Russian Federation’s “shadow fleet.”
This marks the first time Australia has directly sanctioned the shadow fleet — a network of vessels Russia uses to circumvent international sanctions and support its unlawful and immoral war against Ukraine. These ships operate using deceptive tactics, including frequent flag changes, disabling tracking systems, and sailing without proper insurance. In doing so, they facilitate the illicit trade of Russian oil and other sanctioned goods.
These sanctions reinforce Australia’s consistent stance on holding Russia, and all those enabling its unlawful invasion of Ukraine, accountable. Alongside measures imposed by key international partners, including Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, Australia’s restrictions contribute to reducing Russia’s oil revenues that fund its war.
Australia has imposed more than 1,400 sanctions in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The country has reaffirmed its commitment to taking coordinated and decisive action to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to disrupt Russia’s ability to finance its aggression.
The Australian Government has once again called on Russia to immediately end the war and withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory, reaffirming its steadfast support for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine. The announcement was published by the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and can be accessed at the following link: Australia imposes sanctions on Russian shadow fleet vessels | Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs
