Australian media outlet Inside Story published a column by former Chargé d’Affaires of Russia and Yugoslavia, High Commissioner to Nigeria and Ghana John Richardson about the history of Crimea and Crimean Tatars in particular, the war crimes of the occupiers, and the context of Russia’s presence on the Crimean peninsula, which threatens the peaceful life of not only Ukraine but also other democratic countries.
“Given such fears (of nuclear weapons use – ed.), some experts argue that Ukraine should or will be forced to make a deal in which Crimea is transferred to Russia. But the eventual transfer of Crimea would simply be a reward for aggression – an outcome that has already been rejected by 141 countries at the UN, arguing that “no territorial ‘acquisition’ resulting from the use of force can be recognized as legitimate.”
If Crimea were to remain under Russian occupation, whether permanently or in a frozen conflict like Cyprus, it would become a dagger pointed at Ukraine. Its protected position makes it an ideal springboard for new invasions and threatens Ukraine’s access to the Black Sea.”
