The Fourth Crimea Platform Summit: Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission

“The European Union will never tire of supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine; only where borders count, there is security and peace for the people,” Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that during the ten years of occupation, Crimea has become a testing ground for Russians for brutal tactics that Russia is now using throughout the occupied part of Ukraine. The tragic echoes of the Soviet-era deportation of Crimean Tatars are still being heard today: disappearances, torture, attempts to destroy Tatar culture and persecution of journalists and human rights defenders.

Ursula von der Leyen assured that Europe supports Ukraine in documenting each crime will help to ensure justice because “peace without justice is not peace.”

“True peace ensures war cannot return, a peace that allows people to focus on their future. And this is why Ukraine’s integration into the European Union is at the heart of our efforts,” Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission

The President of the European Commission emphasized that Europe has been on Ukraine’s side since the first day of Russia’s aggression and has already provided more than 118 billion euros of support, with much more to come. She also said that Putin’s attempts to break Ukraine’s spirit have failed. Instead, Ukraine stands strong.

“Our people have never been closer. Together, we will endure and prevail, united as we are in our commitment to a free and democratic Ukraine”, Ursula von der Leyen said.
