The Fourth Crimea Platform Summit: Viola Amherd, President of the Swiss Confederation
‘More than 10 years have passed since Russia occupied Crimea. Russia is increasing its policy of repression in every possible way and is thinking about isolating those who oppose this occupation,’ said Viola Amherd, President of the Swiss Confederation.
The President of the Swiss Confederation, Ms Viola Amherd, noted that she was particularly concerned about reports of torture, as well as restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association and movement.
Switzerland called on Russia to respect its obligations under international law. The President of the Swiss Confederation reiterated the strongest condemnation of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and called for the immediate withdrawal of its troops from Ukrainian territory.
‘We are talking about the forced conscription of Ukrainian citizens into the Russian armed forces. This violates the Fourth Geneva Convention and is a war crime. I would like to emphasize this in light of the fact that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Convention. Switzerland calls on Russia to respect its obligations under international law,’ said Viola Amherd.
She reaffirmed and emphasized full support for Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity. She noted that, at Ukraine’s request, Switzerland organised the first Peace Summit in June this year to inspire the future peace process and propose practical steps for implementation. 100 countries participated in the Summit, and more than 80 delegations supported the joint Communiqué, sending a strong signal in favour of a just peace in Ukraine and respect for international law. Viola Amherd also expressed her full solidarity with Ukrainian citizens, especially those living in the temporarily occupied territories.
