Crimea Global. Understanding Ukraine through the South 2023: How It Was

The international conference Crimea Global. Understanding Ukraine through the South exemplifies modern Ukrainian diplomacy, opening doors to the world by showcasing the real situation in Ukraine, its challenges, and aspirations. This event, unique for Ukraine in terms of collaboration with countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, goes beyond traditional international meetings—it’s a platform where the stories, experiences, and dreams of many peoples united in the struggle for justice and freedom come together.

The conference was first held in 2023, bringing over 300 participants from different parts of the world to Kyiv to create a unique space for interaction. Among the invited guests were experts, opinion leaders, human rights advocates, diplomats, and civil sector representatives from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It was a true mosaic of experiences and voices, with over 35 speakers sharing knowledge and perspectives on modern global challenges.

Last year, the event highlighted Crimea as a symbol of Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s colonial ambitions. The conference introduced a new dimension of understanding and cooperation between Ukraine and countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, which have also faced similar post-colonial challenges. Its importance was underscored by panel discussions on justice, human rights, food security, the situation in the Black Sea, and support for the Peace Formula.

With a particular focus on the experiences of countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the conference became a platform for in-depth dialogue between regions that may seem geographically distant but share much in common in their history of fighting for rights, freedom, and dignity. Shared challenges—from armed conflicts to humanitarian crises—brought together the voices of thought leaders from many nations.

Crimea Global is not just an event. It is a symbol of mutual support and dialogue, a place where ideas are discussed, and bridges between cultures are built. Last year’s event, a breakthrough in international diplomacy, opened new opportunities for Ukraine to expand cooperation with countries that have walked their own difficult paths toward freedom and human rights.

This year’s summit promises to be equally remarkable, gathering leading experts, diplomats, and human rights advocates to discuss the challenges and prospects for cooperation between Ukraine and countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Crimea Global is a dialogue about the past, present, and future, where every voice matters, and every story counts. The event aims to facilitate an exchange of experiences and visions between various countries, spread information about Ukraine, especially Crimea—its integral part—and promote the Peace Formula.

The conference will be held at the initiative of the Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea / Office of the Crimea Platform, co-organized by the Media Initiative for Human Rights, the ZMINA Human Rights Center, and Ukrainian PEN, with support from the Centre for Information Resilience.
