11 Years of War. Starting Point: Crimea Forum. An opening address by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk
As part of the 11 Years of War. Starting Point: Crimea Forum, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk, delivered an opening address.
“The Russian war against Ukraine has been ongoing for 11 years, with February 26 marking the starting point. On that day, thousands of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars took to the streets in protest, resisting Russian forces and defending their right to live in a free, democratic state. Yet, the struggle continues to this day,” stated Ruslan Stefanchuk.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada emphasized that Russia has imprisoned hundreds of Crimeans for their pro-Ukrainian stance, persecuting those who dared to speak the truth. Ruslan Stefanchuk underscored that Russia’s primary goal was to erase Ukrainian identity and historical memory on the peninsula, but the fight for Crimea’s return continues.
“Crimea will be liberated because the truth is on our side. Our people stand with us, as does the entire civilized world. But this victory requires collective effort. That is why I appeal to our international partners and urge continued support—do not give occupation, repression, and crimes any chance, because every step brings us closer to justice and victory,” stressed Ruslan Stefanchuk.
During his speech, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk also honored activists who suffered under Russian occupation for their pro-Ukrainian stance. He specifically mentioned Halyna Dovhopola, sentenced to twelve years in prison, and Hennadii Afanasiev, a Crimean activist and former political prisoner who joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine and gave his life for Ukraine in 2022. His dedication has become a symbol of the Ukrainian people’s struggle and resilience.
