International Court of Justice

The merits of the case: Ukraine filed a claim before the International Court of Justice regarding the violation by the Russian Federation the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Substantial stages of the case:

April 19, 2017 – the Court issued an order on the Ukraine’s request for the indication of provisional measures. The order required Russia, among other things, to «refrain from maintaining or imposing limitations on the ability of the Crimean Tatar community to preserve its representative institutions, including the Mejlis» and to «ensure the availability of education in the Ukrainian language».

June 12, 2018 – Ukraine submitted a Memorandum on the violation by the Russian Federation of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

June 3-7, 2019 – holding the hearings on the Court’s jurisdiction to resolve the dispute.

November 8, 2019 – the judgment relating to the jurisdiction and admissibility of the application in favour of Ukraine.

August 9, 2021 – the Court has set a deadline 9 August 2021 for the filing of the Counter-Memorial of the Russian Federation.
