The House of Representatives of the Netherlands Recognizes the Deportation of the Crimean Tatar People as Genocide
On 18 June 2025, the House of Representatives of the States General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands adopted a resolution recognizing the mass deportation of the Crimean Tatar people in 1944 as a genocide committed by the Soviet regime (document registration number — 21 501-20, No. 2259).
The adopted resolution states that the mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944 must be recognized as genocide in accordance with modern international legal standards. The resolution also notes that since the illegal occupation of Crimea in 2014, many Crimean Tatars have been imprisoned, tortured, or forcibly disappeared as a result of the Russian Federation’s repressive policies. The House expressed its belief that the Russian Federation, as the successor to the USSR, is likely continuing the policy of genocide against the Crimean Tatar people.
The Dutch Parliament has called on the government to initiate, together with EU member states, a joint study on the possibility of recognizing the 1944 deportation of the Crimean Tatar people as an act of genocide, and to identify potential avenues for achieving such recognition in coordination with international partners. Previously, the deportation was recognized as an act of genocide against the Crimean Tatar people by Ukraine in 2015, Latvia and Lithuania in 2019, the House of Commons of Canada in 2022, and by Poland, Estonia, and the Czech Senate in 2024.
The Crimea Platform expresses sincere gratitude to the House of Representatives of the Netherlands for its consistent support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for its solidarity with the Crimean Tatar people, who continue to fight for their rights and freedom under occupation. The Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, together with the Ukrainian Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, continues its efforts to achieve recognition of the 1944 deportation as an act of genocide in other countries.
We call on the parliaments of other nations to support Ukraine and the Crimean Tatar people by joining the process of recognizing the 1944 deportation as an act of genocide. Only through collective efforts can historical justice be restored.
