The Occupiers Refuse to Provide Medical Care to Crimean Political Prisoners in Russian Prisons

Political prisoners 61-year-old Azamat Eiupov and 60-year-old Ruslan Nahaiev, 60, who were unjustifiably sentenced to 17 and 13 years in prison by the occupiers, are not provided with medical care. The men are being held in a jail in Verkhneuralsk in the Chelyabinsk region, Russia, two and a half thousand kilometers from Crimea.

The political prisoner’s lawyer said that Azamat Eiupov had written a petition asking for medical assistance and physical examination but had not received a response.

“Eiupov’s relatives send him medicines to the prison, but he has to be thoroughly examined,” the lawyer said.

Azamat Eiupov suffered four ischemic strokes while he was held in a pre-trial detention center after being arrested by Russian security forces in Bilohirsk on February 17, 2021. Already in May 2022, due to the lack of medical care, Azamat was unable to move without assistance. The occupation court ignored the political prisoner’s health condition and sentenced him to 17 years in prison.

Ruslan Nahaiev also sought medical assistance but was ignored by the Russians. According to the lawyer, a doctor visited the prison but did not examine the Crimean Tatar. Earlier, the political prisoner’s wife reported that he suffered from high blood pressure and kidney pain.

The security forces detained Ruslan Nahaiev in June 2019 on trumped-up charges of allegedly “participating in terrorist activities” and sentenced him to 13 years in prison.
