Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi reaffirmed Japan’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including Crimea

“The Crimea Platform Summit serves as an important forum to reaffirm, at a time when the foundations of the international order are being seriously shaken, the necessity of returning to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and of maintaining and strengthening the international order based on the rule of law. Japan has consistently supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including Crimea, and this position remains unchanged”. 

Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, issued an official written message on the occasion of the Sixth Summit of the International Crimea Platform, reaffirming Tokyo’s steadfast stance on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and urging international unity to uphold the rule of law.

In her message, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed deep respect for the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the leadership of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy:

“I renew my respect for the day-to-day efforts of the Ukrainian people to defend their country and freedom. I would also like to express my respect for President Zelenskyy who is striving courageously and earnestly, whilst encouraging those who are fighting for their own future day and night, for the peace of his homeland,” stated Sanae Takaichi.

The Prime Minister reiterated Japan’s position against any unilateral attempt to alter borders by force:

“We are deeply concerned about the suffering of those who were displaced from their home, Crimea, as well as those who remain in Crimea. Through today’s meeting, it is important that we reaffirm to the international community, the principle that attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force must not be tolerated,” she emphasized.

Prime Minister Takaichi stressed the need for close international coordination to achieve a just and lasting peace and reaffirmed Japan’s continued support for Ukraine, including sanctions against Russia and assistance with recovery and reconstruction.
