Prime Minister of Malta Robert Abela called for an end to Russia’s occupation of Crimea and accountability for violations of international law

“Twelve years since its first attempt of the forced annexation, Malta once again strongly condemns Russia’s illegal and illegitimate occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. These actions violate the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of states, as enshrined within the Charter of the United Nations.”

Prime Minister of Malta Robert Abela called on the Russian Federation to immediately withdraw its illegal military occupation of Crimea and other Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia.

Robert Abela said that people living under Russian occupation continue to face discriminatory repression and strict control imposed by the occupation administration of the Russian Federation. He highlighted deportations, the forced imposition of Russian citizenship, restrictions on freedom of expression, the militarization of youth and unfair criminal proceedings.

He urged Russian authorities to ensure the immediate and unconditional return of all unlawfully deported and forcibly transferred Ukrainian children.

“Accountability is essential to securing justice for victims, deterring future violations and preserving the integrity of the international legal system,” Abela said.

He reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to international law, accountability and the protection of victims’ rights, including through continued support for international courts, tribunals and accountability mechanisms.
