Research Fellow in the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) Ed Arnold: Putin’s long term plan could lose him Crimea

Ed Arnold is a Research Fellow for European Security within the International Security department at RUSI. His experience covers defence, intelligence, counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency, within the public and private sector. His primary research focus is on the transformation of European security following Russia’s war on Ukraine.

  1. “Putin’s long term plan could lose him Crimea as Ukraine begins a winter campaign of long range missile strikes on Russian logistics. Those attacks to degrade Russia are constant throughout the winter, so logistics hubs, ammunition dumps, defensive equipment, even trench digging equipment will probably start to be struck.”
  1. “From a diplomatic point of view what Ukrainians really need to do now, and the US, the UK and France – put a lot of pressure on the Germans as well to unlock their version of the missile “Taurus”, which will provide a bit of extra range and the capacity. Ukraine just needs a number of missiles to use. They’ve got a huge prioritized target list, and they just need the missiles to be able to execute their targets.”
