The Saeima of Latvia adopted a statement in support of Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression
On October 17, 2024, on the eve of the Third Parliamentary Summit of the Crimea Platform in Riga, the Saeima of Latvia adopted a statement supporting Ukraine. The statement emphasizes that the Crimea Platform is an essential instrument of international cooperation to counter Russian aggression as a global threat and to ensure the inviolability of the policy of non-recognition of the illegally occupied territories of Ukraine.
The Saeima reaffirmed its readiness to actively participate in implementing the Crimea Platform’s goals and to facilitate maximum international support for Ukraine. The Latvian Parliament called on the international community to support Ukraine’s struggle for freedom, democracy, and territorial integrity.
The Latvian parliament also called on the allies to provide Ukraine with the necessary weapons, including medium- and long-range missiles, and to allow their use at Ukraine’s discretion for self-defense, without restrictions on legitimate military targets on Russian territory.
The parliament also supported the establishment of a special tribunal to investigate crimes of aggression against Ukraine, which would have broad international support and ensure the accountability of senior Russian officials. In addition, the Latvian MPs urged increasing sanctions against Russia and Belarus, introducing effective restrictive measures, and taking active steps to prevent the circumvention of sanctions.
In her statement, Saeima reaffirmed continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Latvian parliamentarians supported Ukraine’s strategic goal of joining NATO and the European Union.
In addition, the statement says that the de-occupation of Crimea is a critical element of ending the war and ensuring lasting peace in the region. The deputies emphasized that peace can only be achieved if Ukraine fully restored its territorial integrity and won the war. Latvia expressed its readiness to continue to provide comprehensive support to Ukraine, both at the international level and through bilateral cooperation.
This statement is an important signal of support for Ukraine from our Latvian allies and another demonstration of the international community’s readiness to actively engage in efforts to restore justice and territorial integrity to Ukraine.
