SBU Releases Footage of Sea Baby Naval Drones Engaging Russian Helicopters in the Kerch Strait
On December 9, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) released footage of a battle between Ukrainian Sea Baby naval drones and Russian military helicopters. The incident occurred on the night of December 6 in the waters of the Kerch Strait near the occupied Crimean Peninsula.
According to the SBU, Russian helicopters, aircraft, and Raptor-class patrol boats attempted to intercept the drones during the operation. However, as noted by the SBU, “Russian pilots saw themselves as hunters expecting an easy target, but they became the prey as the maritime drones returned fire.”
The Sea Baby naval drones were equipped with large-caliber machine guns featuring automatic targeting and guidance systems, allowing them to repel the Russian attack effectively. Intercepted radio communications revealed that Russian helicopters sustained significant damage and required extensive repairs. Additionally, there were reports of casualties and injuries among Russian military personnel. During the battle, Ukrainian drones also struck a barge that was transporting military equipment and materials for the repair of the Crimean Bridge.
The Sea Baby naval drones stand out due to modern technological solutions that make them an effective weapon for striking strategic targets. The drones are equipped with large-caliber machine guns featuring automated targeting and guidance systems, allowing them to autonomously identify and hit moving targets, such as patrol boats and helicopters. In addition, Sea Baby drones are capable of transporting up to 850 kg of explosives, which enables them to carry out sabotage attacks on military ships, barges with military equipment, and critical infrastructure, such as the Crimean Bridge.
Thanks to their integrated artificial intelligence (AI) systems, the Sea Baby drones can operate both under the control of operators and in a fully autonomous mode. The AI allows drones to autonomously select routes, avoid obstacles, and adapt to combat conditions in real-time. Their low noise levels and minimal radar signature make them difficult to detect by radar or sonar systems, complicating enemy detection efforts.
Ukraine’s active operations in the Black Sea illustrate a modern maritime strategy based on flexibility, mobility, and innovative technologies. Through these operations, Ukrainian forces have partially disrupted the enemy’s logistical chains and limited Russia’s control over the Black Sea. The effective use of naval drones, sabotage missions, and precision strikes on strategically significant targets shows that Ukraine is not only defending its territories but is also shaping a new concept of maritime security.
Ukraine’s active operations in the Black Sea exemplify a modern maritime strategy based on flexibility, mobility, and innovative technologies. These operations have successfully disrupted the enemy’s logistical chains and reduced its control over the Black Sea’s maritime space. The effective use of naval drones, sabotage missions, and precision strikes on strategically significant targets demonstrates that Ukraine is not only fighting to defend its territories but also shaping a new concept of maritime security. These achievements have significantly impacted the security of Ukraine and the entire Black Sea region.
