Czech Senate to Consider Resolution Recognizing the 1944 Deportation of Crimean Tatars as Genocide

On November 19, the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Security of the Czech Senate unanimously approved a draft resolution recognizing the 1944 deportation of Crimean Tatars as genocide. During a meeting with representatives of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People on November 22, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský announced that the document would be considered at the Senate’s next session in December.

During the meeting, Jan Lipavský emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of tragic historical events and expressed support for the Crimean Tatar people.

Ukraine (2015), Lithuania and Latvia (2019), Canada (2022), Poland, and Estonia (2024) have already recognized the deportation of Crimean Tatars as an act of genocide.

The Czech Senate’s approval of this resolution will be essential in acknowledging historical justice and supporting the Crimean Tatar people in their struggle for rights and preserving their identity.
