The Head of the Crimea platform Department Maria Tomak took part in the LMF Talks in Berlin

As part of the working trip to Berlin in late October, Maria Tomak, the head of the Crimea platform Department, spoke at a panel discussion “The Future of Crimea as a Key to Justice”. The panel discussion was held as part of the LMF Talks event, organized by the Lviv Media Forum.

The discussion was held at the think tank Das Zentrum Liberale Moderne (LibMod). The discussion was also attended by Ukrainian journalist Sevgil Musayeva and Wilfried Jilge, Associate Fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), expert on Ukraine and Wider Black Sea region. The moderator was Marieluise Beck, one of Ukraine’s key allies in the German political and public environment, a German politician and one of the founders of LibMod.

In her speech, Maria Tomak paid special attention to reintegration issues, in particular, she presented the main aspects of the document “Priority steps of the Ukrainian state after the deoccupation of Crimea”, which was developed jointly by the Mission, MPs of Ukraine, representatives of the Government of Ukraine and the expert community. Maria Tomak emphasized the key steps that Ukraine will have to take after the liberation of the peninsula.

“The priority issues to be worked on after deoccupation are related to the restoration of public administration bodies, the search for human resources, ensuring the restoration of justice on the Crimean peninsula, bringing to justice those responsible for international crimes and crimes against the foundations of national security, in particular citizens who deliberately contributed to the occupation of the territory of Ukraine,” said the head of the Crimea platform Department.

Maria Tomak also emphasized that one of the most difficult issues that the Mission is dealing with today is the Russian imperial narratives about Crimea, which are spreading in Western countries, as well as in the countries of the Global South.

“And this is not about purely humanitarian aspects or the academic environment. It is about how the political establishment perceives Crimea and, accordingly, whether Ukraine receives enough weapons and support to liberate the peninsula,” – said Maria Tomak during the conversation.

As part of the trip, the head of the Crimea platform Department  met with representatives of the German Federal Foreign Office, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and other non-governmental organizations working on issues related to Ukraine.

We thank LvivMediaForum for organizing such important international events and paying attention to the topic of Crimea.
