“The role of parliaments is to constantly remind citizens of their countries about the need to de-occupy the Crimean peninsula”, – Speaker of the Czech Parliament Marketa Pekarova Adamova
“The role of parliaments is to constantly remind citizens of their countries about the need to de-occupy the Crimean peninsula”
The Speaker of the Czech Parliament, Marketa Pekarova Adamova, as a representative of the host country of this year’s Summit, addressed the participants of the Second Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimean Platform, thanking the present Speakers of the Parliament for their participation who are uniting their efforts to de-occupy the Crimean peninsula.
Ms. Adamova emphasized the main goal of the Summit: “We have to fight the oblivion of the occupation of the Crimean peninsula by the international community. Unfortunately, people tend to forget the terrible events of the seizure of Crimea, which will soon be 10 years old.”
In this context, she also noted that the Kremlin interpreted the lack of an adequate response from the world to the occupation of Crimea in 2014 as a sign of weakness and an invitation to take further aggressive actions against Ukraine, including the deportation of children (as of today, more than 4,000 Ukrainian children have been abducted from the occupied Crimea).
According to the speaker, in the twenty-first century, there should be no place in the world for armed aggression and violations of the principles of international law. The brutal attack on Israel, the instability in the Taiwan Strait and the Caucasus, unfortunately, are examples of what the international community must work on.
Finally, Ms. Adamova announced the establishment of the Parliamentary Support Group for the International Crimea Platform within the Czech Parliament, which will deal not only with the issue of de-occupation, but will also take on the issue of reintegration and restoration of the Crimean peninsula after its liberation by Ukraine.
