“The war of aggression on Ukraine must end, and respect for international legal norms must be restored”, Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States

At the start of his speech Secretary General of the OAS Luis Almagro reiterated full support for four principal goals of the Summit. Among them he mentioned the reaffirmation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, acceleration of the Crimea’s de-occupation, drawing attention to violations of international law and human rights, as a result of Russia’s occupation of Crimea, and the creation of a reliable foundation for the Platform to become an effective mechanism to facilitate the postwar reconstruction of Crimea. 

The speaker highlighted that Russia’s illegal invasion started with the occupation of Crimea in 2014. He stated that the Permanent Council of the OAS adopted two crucial Resolutions last year. The first resolution suspended Russia’s Permanent Observer Status from the Organization and in the second document, the Council condemned the unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression on Ukraine.

“If Ukraine cannot export grain, its economy will suffer, food prices will rise, and food insecurity in the whole world will exacerbate, causing widespread famine in low-income and agriculturally dependent countries”, said Luis Almagro.
