The Exhibition MİRAS. Heritage Continues in Kyiv, Showcasing Crimean Tatar Culture
The exhibition MİRAS. Heritage, which opened at the Treasury of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine on October 31, 2022, will run until January 1, 2025. This large-scale project highlights the richness of the cultural heritage of the Crimean Tatars, the indigenous people of Ukraine, whose history is intricately connected to Crimea and the Northern Black Sea region.
The exhibition features over 200 unique artifacts, including silver belts (kushaks), adornments for women’s headwear, Quran cases, men’s amulets, samples of gold embroidery, traditional clothing, and coffee utensils. Most exhibits date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, demonstrating the refined craftsmanship of Crimean Tatar filigree and intricate ornamental compositions.
A special highlight of the exhibition is Friedrich Gross’s lithographs, which depict Crimea in the first half of the 19th century. These works vividly capture the atmosphere of the traditional Crimean Tatar world, much of which was lost during Russian colonization.
According to the exhibition’s curators—Oleksii Savchenko, Senior Research Fellow at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, and Esma Adzhieva, Head of the NGO Alem—the project aims to familiarize the public with Crimean Tatar culture and highlight shared meanings and values that unite Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars. The exhibition serves as a platform for cultural dialogue and showcases the richness of Crimean Tatar traditions.Visitors can explore the exhibition at the Treasury of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine at 9 Lavrska Street, Kyiv.
